Explain of Advantages of Electric traction system

Hello friends, today I am going to tell you that the advantages of an electric traction system: If you also want to know, then keep reading this article completely.

Advantages of electric traction system

(i) High Starting Torque – To accelerate the train and to overcome the force of friction and gravity applied by the track, the starting torque should be high. As the speed of the vehicle increases, the torque automatically decreases. Hence less torque is required afterward.

(ii) Speed-Torque Characteristic- If two separate motors are mounted on different driving axles in a train, then their relative speed depends on the speed of the axles, but all the wheels Do not wear uniformly, due to which there is a difference in the speed of the motor and the circumferential speeds of the wheels. But the circumferential speeds of all the wheels cannot be assumed to be the same, otherwise, the circumferential speed of all the driving wheels will be the same in case the slip is zero. The difference between the circumferential speeds of two related wheels is called slip.

Let the speeds of the motors be N1 and N2 as shown in the figure. If the motor has a shunt characteristic, then the torque T1 of a motor rotating at N1 speed will be about half of the torque T2 of a motor rotating at N2 speed, as is clear from the figure, but both motors are required to function properly. The same mechanical load must be exerted, therefore, a motor with shunt characteristics is not suitable for traction work. On the other hand, due to the difference in the speed of the motor of the series characteristic, the torque produced by it (T1′ and T2′) has little effect, as is clear from the figure.

(iii). Simple Speed Control – Since the electric train has to stop repeatedly, the connecting motor should be such that its speed can be controlled by a simple method.

(iv) Electric Braking Ability – While selecting the traction motor, it should be kept in mind that regeneration and rheostatic braking can be easily used.

(v) Ability to Tolerate Fluctuation in Supply Voltage – The starting current of the connecting motor is high, so it is natural for the supply voltage to fluctuate. Therefore, the connecting traction motor must be able to tolerate this fluctuation in voltage.

(vi) Ability to Tolerate Unstable Barriers in Supply – The supply-voltage from the motor while crossing the section insulators and cross-overs in the power distribution system of the connecting rod. There may be a momentary separation of the motor, so the traction motor must be able to tolerate this temporary interruption.

(vii) Parallel operation – Often more than one motor is used in an electric connecting train, so the speed-torque and current-torque characteristics of the traction motors should be such that when they are mechanically coupled and operated in parallel. Then they can share the mechanical load equally among themselves. Two or four motors are operated in parallel per electric car.

(viii) Overload Ability- Since electric traction trains may have an overloaded condition at any time, the overload capacity of the motor used in these should be high.

Now you must know that the advantages of an electric traction system.
