Advantages of AC Transmission

(i) In alternating current transmission, electric power can be generated at high potential.

(ii) Maintenance of AC sub-station is easy and low cost.

(iii) AC potential can be stepped up or down with the help of a transformer.

(iv) Alternating current is used to transmit power at high potential and distribute energy at a safe potential.

 

Disadvantages of AC Transmission

(i) AC line requires more copper than DC line. |

(ii) AC transmission line is more challenging to construct than DC.

(iii) The effective resistance of the line increases due to the skin effect in the AC system.

(iv) The charge current in AC causes power loss even in the absence of load.

(v) Potential regulation is more in AC transmission due to inductance and capacitive effect.

(vi). Requires more insulation than DC.

Advantages of DC Transmission

(i) It requires only two conductors, whereas Q. Three conductors are needed in the transmission of current, which saves copper and aluminum conductor metals.

(ii) There is no problem with inductance, resistance, phase change, and surge in DC transmission.

(iii) DC transmission has less potential drop than AC line for the same load and transmitted end potential. But there should be no motivation for this.

(iv) There is no problem with the skin effect in the DC system. Therefore, the area of ​​cross-section of the conductor is fully utilized.

(v) The potential difference across the insulation of the same working potential is less in a DC system than in an AC system. Hence, less insulation is required in the DC system.

(vi) The corona effect is also more negligible in the DC line, and the communication circuit’s interference is also less.

(vii) There is no dielectric loss in high voltage DC transmission.

(viii) There is no stability problem and synchronization problem in DC transmission.

(ix) Due to the absence of inductive and capacitive effects in the DC system, the line potential regulation is less.

 

Disadvantages of DC Transmission

(i) Electric power cannot be produced at high dc voltage due to communication problems.

(ii) The DC voltage cannot be stepped up for transmission of power at higher voltages.

(iii) DC switches and circuit breakers have their limitations.
