Working of a Four Stroke Petrol Engine

Petrol engine has a carburetor, through which the mixture enters the cylinder and after compression in the mixture, the mixture is ignited by a spark generated by the sparking plug.

The function of the carburetor is to determine the quality of the mixture under different conditions of the vehicle. When the vehicle is in first gear, the rich mixture (air, fuel) is sent by the carburetor into the cylinder and when the vehicle is in other top gear, the carburetor is sent into the fuel air cylinder.

The complete combustion process in an engine takes place in the following four strokes

(i) Suction Stroke – It consists of the following functions

  • (a) Piston moves from TDC to BDC.
  • (b) The inlet valve is open.
  • (c) When the piston moves towards BDC, the vacuum in the cylinder increases, so that petrol and air enter the cylinder from the carburettor through the inlet valve.
  • (d) The inlet valve closes as soon as the piston reaches BDC.

(ii) Compression Stroke – Inthis, the piston moves from BDC to TDC, with both valves closed. Compression of the mixture filled in the cylinder occurs due to which the particles of the mixture collide with each other, there will be friction, due to the increase of friction, the temperature will increase and the mixture will turn into mist, due to which the mixture is in a state of burning, then in the sparking done by the spark plug The mixture burns. All this action is theoretically done very quickly (in less time).

(iii) Expansion Stroke – In this the piston moves from TDC to BDC. Both the valves are closed and the burnt gas expands and the pressure energy of the burnt gas will change mechanically. This stroke is also called power stroke.

(iv) Adjustment Stroke – The adjustment valve opens as soon as the piston reaches BDC and as it moves towards TDC, the burnt gases are released at constant pressure.
