Working Principle of Four Stroke Diesel Engine

Heavy oil is used in this engine. This fuel does not evaporate easily. Its ignition system is different from that of a petrol engine. In this engine, small particles of diesel are sprayed by an injector in the compressed air at high pressure and high temperature.

In all four strokes, this cycle is completed as follows

(i) Suction Stroke 

In this engine, instead of carburetor, a filter is installed, through which the air is purified. When the piston moves from TDC to BDC, the inlet valve is open and air enters the cylinder at a constant pressure. 

(ii) Compression Stroke 

is the compression of pure air. For this, the piston moves from BDC to TDC, then the pressure on the air increases and the volume decreases. At this time both the valves remain closed. 

(iii) Expansion Stroke 

At the end of the compression stroke diesel is sprayed at high pressure by the injector which automatically ignites when exposed to high temperature air in the cylinder. After combustion the gases expand by adiabatic method. The high pressure gases push the piston down so that the piston moves from TDC to BDC.

(iv) Adjust Stroke 

In this stroke the piston moves from BDC to TDC and the gases are released at constant pressure with the help of the adjust valve, at the end of this stroke the adjust valve is closed and the inlet valve is opened.
