What is a Translay Protection Scheme
It is an evolved version of the merged price potential system, and its working principle is that the current entering one end at any moment is the same as the current exiting the other end. This system is used for both ground fault and phase fault protection and can be used for the single gusset, three-way feeder, T/F feeder, tee-off feeder and parallel feeder.
A simple translay protection mechanism to protect the feeder is shown in Figure 1. When the feeder is fault-free, the same current flows through the secondary CTs, 1 and 1′ at both ends of the line and the same emf is induced in the contacting windings 2 and 2′.
Coils 2 and 2′ are in series 4 and 4′ respectively but are connected in reverse by pilot wire. When a fault occurs, the induced emf in the CT at one end will be higher than that of the current transformer at the other end, due to which some current will flow in the operating coil 4 and 4′ and the pilot wire and when this rotating recent increases from a specific value, the relay, Tripping closes the circuit and disconnects the feeder from the supply.

A translay relay is shown in Figure 2 using it for a 3ϕ feeder. It has three windings in the upper magnetic circuit. In which there are two primary and one secondary. The upper minor primary winding is the phase fault winding connected to the R and B current transformers. The midpoint of this winding is connected to the current transformer of the y phase. The bottom sizeable primary winding acts as the leakage winding and is connected to the neutral point of the B phase current transformer and CTs. The secondary winding on the upper magnet acts as an opposite potential T/F as in the merge-price mechanism and is connected in reverse with two pilot wires with the same winding on the magnet at the other end. The winding on the bottom magnet is connected in series with the pilot wire.
Under normal conditions, no current flows through the pilot wire because opposite potentials are equal. But when a fault occurs, the induced potential in the winding varies, causing a current to flow in the lower component of the relay and the pilot wire, and the torque produced on the disc due to the flux produced in the upper and lower magnets. This disc rotates with the moment and breaks the circuit by closing the trip circuit.
