What is a Static Relay: Its Advantages, Uses

Hello friends, today I am going to tell you What is a Static Relay?, Advantages Static Relay, uses of Static Relay: If you also want to know, then keep reading this article completely.

What is a Static Relay?

The electromagnetic relay can be converted into a static relay, and the electromagnetic relay uses an electronic circuit to obtain the characteristic of the moving part from the static relay. For example, the distance is arranged by the disc to regulate the operating time in an induction relay. Similarly, in a static relay, the R-C time delay is obtained by adjusting the resistance in the circuit.

In other words, the functions controlled by the moving part in the electromagnetic relay are owned by the electronic circuit control in the static relay.

Advantages Static Relay?

Static relay has the following advantages over electromagnetic relay

  • They have more meaning.
  • The operating rate is high.
  • In this, the moving parts are only in the tripping circuit.
  • Very little volt-amp is required to operate a static relay, so current transformers and power transformers of deficient VA ratings are used.

Part of Static Relay?

A static relay consists of the following parts for operation

  1. Voltage Supply – 24VDC has required to power the circuit of the static relay. This is achieved by converting 230 VAC to 240 VDC or switching the station battery supply from 110 to 24VDC.
  2. Comparator: It compares the actual supply with a predetermined reference. It compares two or more potentials.
  3. Time Delay Circuit: The time required for operation is set by adjusting the value of RC in the circuit.
  4. Logic Circuit: This circuit fixed the condition to operate the relay through a logical gate, and when these conditions are satisfied, then relay operation starts.
  5. Output Device: The actual tripping of the relay is achieved by the firing circuit of the SCR or by operating an armature type relay connected to the signal coming into the output from the logical gate.

Uses of static relay?

  1. For medium and long transmission protection.
  2. To protect parallel feeders.
  3. It provides backup protection to the unit.
  4. They are also used in interconnected and T-connected lines.

Classification/Type of Static Relay?

Based on operating time, immunological relays are classified as follows.

  1. Instantaneous Relay: In case of a fault in this type of relay, the operation starts immediately.
  2. Definite Time Lag Relay: In this type of relay, the working time is entirely independent of current and functional quantity value.
  3. Inverse Time Lag Relay: In this type of relay, the operating time is inversely proportional to the value of the current and other components operating the relay.
  4. Inverse Definite Time Lag Relay: In this type of relay, the operating time is proportional to the current of the relay and the lowest value of the operational components.
