What is Velox Boiler
It was found that when the speed of the liquefied gases is greater than the acoustic speed, the rate of transfer is much higher than that of the subsonic flow. This principle is used in Velox boilers to achieve more heat transfer from less surface. If the pressure of the combustion air is more than 2 bar then the speed of the air is greater than the acoustic speed in the air.
Working principle of Velox boiler
The arrangement of the various components of a Velox boiler is shown in the figure. It is a fire duct, propelled circulating, vertical boiler. In this, air is compressed to 2.5 bar in an air compressor and sent to a vertical combustion chamber. Passing air to this pressure causes the movement of the gas in the combustion chamber and gas tubes to be supersonic, resulting in high heat removal rates (8 to 10 x 10 kJ/ms). Initially, the compressor is driven by an electric motor, but when the boiler is turned on, it is powered by a gas turbine driven by liquefied gases. Inside the combustion chamber there are vertical tubes of about 100 mm diameter all around through which water flows. Inside these tubes there are tubes of about 25 mm diameter, in which the flammable gases flow at the speed of about 200 to 300 m/s. Fuel and enriched air are injected downward into the combustion chamber. The liquefied gas produced by the combustion of fuel flows upwards into the evaporator tubes in the chamber as shown in the figure. After receiving heat from the tad gases flowing on the feed side of these tubes, it gets converted into steam. This mixture of steam and water is like a vapor separator. Here the steam separates from the mixture and flows into the superheater. From where the superheated steam becomes the first conductor. The separated water particles in the separator are sent back to the water tubes by a water circulation, pump at a pressure of 2 bar higher than the boiler pressure. In order to avoid overheating of the water tubes, 10 to 20 times more water is passed through than the steam generated.
The liquefied gases released from the gas tubes in the combustion chamber flow into a superheater where the heat of these gases is used to superheat the steam. The pressure of the gases coming out of the superheater is 2.5 bar and the temperature is 500 ° C. Now these gases are circulated in a gas turbine which drives the compressor by the generated power. The gas from the gas turbine is finally released into the atmosphere through a chimney passing through a compositor. The temperature of this gas is 90°C and the speed is 120 m/s. In this the air is not preheated because due to the compression of air in the compressor, its temperature becomes about 150 °C.
Velox boilers are not designed to exceed 100 tonne/h as this output requires 4500 kW to run the compressor.
