What is indirect arc furnace? its structure and Working principle

Hello friends, today I am going to tell you what is indirect arc furnace?, the structure of an indirect arc furnace, working of indirect arc furnace: If you also want to know then keep reading this article completely. so let’s start

the Structure of indirect arc furnace

Figure 1 shows an indirect arc furnace. In this furnace, an arc is formed between two electrodes. An indirect arc furnace is suitable for melting metals that have a low melting point, such as non-ferrous metals, brass, copper, zinc, indirect arc furnace has two electrodes, the shape of this furnace is cylindrical, it is placed at an inclined point. It is made so that liquid steel can be easily poured into another vessel. The process of tilting the furnace to pour molten liquid steel is called tapping.

Working of indirect arc furnace

In an indirect arc furnace, the arc is generated above the surface of the charge between two electrodes. The heat generated in this arc process is only by heating the charge and melting it by radiation. In this type of furnace, currently does not flow in the charge. Therefore, the temperature obtained in indirect arc furnaces is lower than that of direct arc furnaces and the efficiency is also relatively low. In this furnace, due to no current flowing in the charge, the electromagnetic force is not generated in it, which does not automatically oscillate and the charge is oscillated by providing rocking to the melting chamber of the furnace by mechanical arrangement.

It uses only two single electrodes, so this method is suitable for single-phase supply only. The chamber of this furnace is made circular from inside. The structure of the chamber is made of acidic or alkaline antisepsis material. Arrangements are also made to take out the molten metal and adequate arrangement is also made to carry the charge in the furnace.

The chamber is placed on the rolls to rotate the furnace. The cylinders are rotated by a gear chain. As the furnace rotates, a greater part of the material is affected by heat. Often both the electrodes are placed in the center of the chamber with the concentric furnace also called as Rocker Furnace.

This furnace is often used for melting and smelting non-ferrous metals. In this, the hot charge can be changed quickly and heating is achieved continuously. To establish an arc in the furnace, the electrodes are brought close to each other, their distance is adjusted as needed when an arc is generated. This furnace is useful for casting copper, bronze, gunmetal, and nickel alloys due to its more flexibility, less metal loss, and better casting.
