What Is Viscosity
What is viscosity- When a layer of a liquid slides over another layer of the same liquid, a frictional force acts between them which opposes the relative motion of the layers. This force is called internal frictional force. Suppose a liquid is flowing on a rigid horizontal plane PQ. The layer of liquid which is in contact with the plane remains stationary. But as we move upwards from this plane, the velocity of the layers increases. The topmost layer flows with the highest velocity. The lengths of the arrows in the figure represent the increasing velocity. Thus there is relative motion between the different layers of the liquid.
Definition of Viscosity – Absence of external force The property of a fluid due to which the fluid opposes the relative motion occurring in its different layers is called ‘Viscosity’.
What is Viscous Force
Definition of Viscous Force – Let the liquid have three parallel layers a, b and c. Of these, layer a has the least velocity, layer b has more a than that and c has the highest. Layer A tries to reduce the velocity of Layer B and Layer B seeks to reduce the velocity of Layer C. Thus each layer pulls back the layer above it. Similarly, each layer pushes the layer below it. Obviously, there are internal tangential forces acting on different layers which try to destroy their relative motion. These forces are called ‘Viscous Force’. If the fluid flow is to be kept in motion, the viscous force has to be reduced by applying an external force. The liquid in, will stop after some time.
• Viscous force F = nA(dv/dx), where n = coefficient of viscosity, A = surface area, dv/dx is velocity-gradient.
When the distance between two layers of a liquid is ‘dy’ and one layer slides over the other layer and the velocities are u and u + du respectively, the shear stress is produced between the two layers due to viscosity and relative velocity. . Due to the upper layer, the shear stress on the adjacent lower layer and the shear stress on the adjacent upper layer due to the lower layer.
Effect of Temperature on Viscosity-
at high temperature. The viscosity of the solution decreases resulting in increased electrosmotic flow, although some buffers are known to be sensitive to pH with temperature.
Units of Viscosity–
In MKS system, force is denoted by Kgf and length as meter (m). In CGS system, dyne and length are in cm. (cm) and in SI system force is represented by Newton (N) and length is represented by meter (m).
