Are you What Is The SF6 Circuit Breaker | Structure and Working of SF6 Circuit Breaker?. If yes then I am sharing detailed information about SF6 Circuit breaker in this post.
What Is The SF6 Circuit Breaker?
Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas is used as arc quenching medium in this type of circuit breaker, it consists of a closed casing with fixed and moving contacts, and SF6 gas flows into the arc interruption chamber under high pressure. . The limited contact is like a hollow cylinder attached to an orc horn. The moving contacts are also cylindrical but have rectangular holes in their sides. So that the gas can come to the arc to quench the arc. The tips of its contacts and the arcing are coated with the horn key because this material is arc-resistant to the tip coffin–tungsten.
Structure of SF6 Circuit Breaker
The structure of the SF6 circuit breaker is shown in the figure.
Working of SF6 Circuit Breaker
When the contacts are closed, the SF6 gas is surrounded by high pressure. When the contacts are opened, there is an oscillation between the references. The opening of the SF6 valve is synchronized. As the valves open, SF6 gas flows through the arc store into the arc barrier chamber. This gas absorbs the electrons available in the arc path and produces stable negative ions, which leads to rapid quenching of the arc. After arc quenching, the contact with the spring pressure is closed, the gas stops flowing.

Advantages of SF6 Circuit Breaker
- These have short arcing time.
- The dielectric strength of SF6 is greater than that of air so that it can interrupt large currents.
- There is no moisture problem in this.
- They do not have the problem of carbon accumulation.
- They do not catch fire as SF6 gas is flammable.
- They are low in maintenance, require a light foundation, and have very few accessories.
- They are entirely closed and have an atmospheric shield, so they are used where explosive events occur, such as mines.
Disadvantages of SF6 Circuit Breaker
- SF6 gas is costly, so the cost of an SF6 circuit breaker is high.
- Since the gas is reconditioned after each operation, additional equipment is required.
Uses of SF6 Circuit Breaker
An SF6 has several interrupter units. Each unit operates up to 60 kA and 50-80kV; several units can be connected in series depending on the system voltage.
- Circuit breakers are used from 132 to 765 kV.
