Francis Turbine – Types, Parts, Working, Diagram

Hello friends, today I am going to tell you Francis Turbine – Types, Parts, Working, Diagram, Main Parts of Francis Turbine , Working of Francis Turbine :If you also want to know, then keep reading this article completely.

Francis Turbine – It is mainly of two types

1. Closed Francis Turbine

2. Open Francis Turbine

1.Closed Francis Turbine– The area of this shell is kept maximum at the entrance and minimum at the end so that the water is evenly distributed and vortex current does not arise. The water then goes into immersion.

2.Open Francis Turbine- It consists of a concrete axis instead of a spiral shell.

Main Parts of Francis Turbine

(i) Spiral Shell – To distribute the guide rings evenly, the cover is made in such a way that the area is maximum in the beginning and minimum at the end.

(ii) Guide Vane Mechanism – Guide vane is also called wicket gate. They are permanently tied in a circle between the two rings. The section of these guide vanes is such that the water passes through it without generating a torrential current. Each guide vane can be rotated relative to a rivet which is attached by a lever.

(iii) Runner and Main Shaft of Turbine – The runner of Francis turbine can be slow, medium or fast according to the specific speed. In small plants, the runner is made of cast iron.

(iv) Draft Tube – The pressure of water at the exhaust of turbine is very less and the kinetic energy of water there is more. Therefore, an annular tube is used to drain the water, from which the pressure energy can be recovered.

Working of Francis Turbine

High pressure water is brought up to the windproof shell of the turbine by a bridge tap. This shell guides the water like a guide vane. The water then falls on the runner vanes.

At the time of entry, water has pressure and kinetic energies in which pressure energy is high and kinetic energy is low. When water falls between the guide vanes, the pressure energy is converted into kinetic energy due to the decrease in area and finally the water enters the draft tube at high velocity and low pressure, thereby increasing the pressure energy again. The pressure difference and relative change in the whole turbine causes the runner to move and the generator generates electricity.
