Off Load Tap Changer
Tapping is given in the primary and secondary coils of the transformer to change the potential in the off load state of the transformer. The tap is changed from one position to the lowest position to the highest position. Tapping is done for low voltage or potential at a low place and high potential at a high place.
When the tap setting of the primary coil is kept at five, the maximum voltage is obtained in that case. When the tap setting is placed in one position of the secondary coil, a high potential is obtained. Tap changing cannot be performed in off load tap changing transformer under load conditions. When it reaches the secondary, it leaves the primary due to its small width, breaking the electric circuit and causing an arc.
If the width of the primary stand is large and when it reaches the secondary, it does not leave the primary, then in this case there is no obstruction in the circuit due to which some part of the coil becomes short circuit and high current starts flowing in the circuit.

On Load Tap Changer
Tapping is done in a parallel sequence equally to the primary and secondary windings which are set in the order 1,2,3,4 and 1, 2, 3, 4′ respectively. If the switches S1 and S2 are closed and the tape set is at 1,1 then the low potential is obtained in the transformer.
If switch S1 is kept open and S2 is closed, then twice as much current flows through S2 as before. Thus the potential at S2 increases. By closing S1 and opening S2, the same potential is set in both the coils. Thus, the same current flows in both the coils.
