What is Relay ?
It is an electrical device fitted between the primary electrical circuit and the circuit breaker with the help of a current transformer and a trip coil, which energizes the relay when there is a fault in the circuit and the power of the relay circuit breaker. For this reason, the circuit is saved from burning out.
If the current flow in any device for a long time, it can destroy the equipment. To overcome such adverse conditions and to prevent any damage, a protective relay system and its associated switching device are used in the power system. Protective relays are automatic devices that sense the fault and send the opening instructions to the circuit breaker connected. The circuit breaker opens, and the fault is automatically removed.
The name of the switchgear addresses all the devices that remove the defect. It includes switches, fuses, circuit breakers, isolators, relays, control panels, CT, etc.
There are many voltage and flux levels between any generating station and the main current point. A protection system should be such that the chance of failure is minimal.

Electro Magnetic Relay
It is divided into the following types-
(i) Attracted Type Relay
(a) Attracted Armature Type Relay – The coil moves the electromagnet in this type of relay. The coil is driven by the operating quantity, which is proportional to the current or voltage of the circuit. The operating quantity produces a magnetic field on which the orbiter depends. It is a single actuating quantity relay.
The operating quantity produces a magnetic flux which then produces an electromagnetic force. This force is proportional to the order of the air gap flux and the order of the current. This relay works for both AC and DC. In DC relays, the attraction of electromagnetic force is constant, whereas, in AC relays, sinusoidal current flows in the coil.
Applications of Relay
These relays are used for over current, undercurrent, over current, over-voltage, under-voltage relay’s AC. and DC. These relays can be used for differential protection. They can be used with a time lag in over current protection.
(b) Balance Beam Type- This type of relay has a horizontal beam mounted in the middle. An armature is on anyone’s side; one coil is on each side. The beam remains in a horizontal position until the operating force exceeds the restraining force. The current of one coil produces the operating torque, and the other coil produces the blocking torque. When the operating torque starts increasing, the beam starts bending, and the contacts are closed.
Advantages of Relay
- It works fast and fast.
