Explain the structure and working of JFET.

Hello friends, in this article I am going to tell you about that, structure and working of JFET. so let’s start

N-channel JFET, is made up of an N-type semiconductor bar, with ohmic contacts made for external connection at both its ends. One end of it is called drain (D) and the other end is called source (S).

Structure of JFET

Construction of JFET

Source – The terminal by which the majority of charge carriers enter the channel.
Drain – The terminal through which the majority of charge carriers exit the channel.
On either side of the.

Gate-semiconductor bar, an impurity region (heavily doped p+ region) is created. This impurity region is internally connected. A single terminal is taken out from it, this is called the Gate terminal (G).

Current flows along the length of the N-type semiconductor bar if an external voltage is applied across the drain and source.
The region between the source and the drain is called a channel and the majority of carriers flow from the source to the drain in the channel.
Similarly, when a heavily doped n region is used on both sides of the p-type semiconductor bar, that device is called a p-channel JFET.

Working of JFET

When a reverse voltage (Vgs) is applied between the Gate (G) and the Source (S) terminal, the width of the depletion laver increases. If we increase VGS, the depletion layer increases due to reverse bias. Due to this, the width of the channel conduction decreases, and the resistance of the N-type bar increases. Hence, the current conduction between the Drain (D) and the Source (S) terminal decreases.

When a reverse voltage (Vgs) is decreased between Gate (G) and Source (S), the width of the depletion region begins to decrease, increasing the width of the channel conduction, and the resistance of the N-type bar also decreases. Hence the current increases between the Drain (D) and Source (S) terminals.

Thus, in a FET, the current flowing between the drain (D) and the source (S) is controlled by the voltage as well as the current flowing between the gate and the source.

Now you must know that the structure and working of JFET. You must have got a good knowledge of this subject.
