What is Sag

If a flexible conductor is hung naturally by a puller between two poles, it will start swinging in the form of a curve in the middle of the conductor. As shown in Fig., If an imaginary line joins the upper ends of the two poles, then the difference between this imaginary line and the lowest point of the conductor in the middle of the curved line is called sag. It is also sometimes called dip DIP.

Effect of Span on Sag

In an overhead transmission line, the sag is proportional to the square of the wide. The jaggedness increases on increasing the width, and on decreasing the width, the jaggedness decreases. Therefore, there are many advantages and disadvantages to expanding the overhead line. which are as follows

(i) Widening of bases will reduce the number of poles used in a transmission line, reducing the cost.
(ii) If there are fewer poles in the transmission line, their maintenance will become easier and cheaper.
(iii) The cors arm can be reduced by increasing the width between the two bases.
(iv) The gap between the conductors can be increased by increasing the width. Due to which the inductance decreases.
(v) An increase in the width leads to an increase in the diameter of the conductor used. Due to which the corona effect is limited.

Losses of Span

(i) Since the spool is proportional to the square of the extension. Therefore, with an increase in the width, there is also an increase in the entanglement.
(ii) An increase in the width increases the sag. Therefore, to reduce this sag, the tower’s height has to be increased, due to which the cost of transmission lines increases.
