Methods for laying underground cables

The reliability of underground cable networks depends on the proper laying of a cable, and the fitting of branch connectors joined to the cable ends. There are mainly three types of cabling.

  • Direct laying methods
  • Draw in system methods
  • Solid system methods

1. Direct Laying Method- This method is accurate, cheap, and accessible. It consists of a 1.5 m deep trench and a 45 cm wide dug. This trench is covered with clean soil, and the cable is covered over this sand bed.

This sand bed traps moisture underground and prevents the cable from decaying. When the cable is inserted into the trench, it is again covered with a sand layer of 10 cm thickness. The trench is then buried with bricks and other heavy materials. If more than one cable is inserted into the trench, 30 cm is maintained between the cables to prevent mutual heating.

Different Methods Of Underground Cable Laying

Advantages

(i) This method is direct and cheap.
(ii) Properly dissipate the heating generated in the cable in this manner.
(iii) Because in this method, the cable is clean and safe, invisible and free from external influences.

Disadvantages

(i) It has a high maintenance rate.
(ii) It is challenging to generalize faults.
(iii) This method is not used in crowded areas.
(iv) Cable is challenging to change.

2. Draw-in method- In this system, a layer of glazed stone, cast iron, concrete is laid according to the cable path, after which the cable is inserted into the central hole. The path duct line is shown in the figure below. In which three duct transmission lines and one duct relay are used in the protection line. Apart from this, the distance between the central holes should be less so that the cable is easy to pull.

Advantages

(i) This method does not require land laying for repair, replacement, and additional cables.
(ii) It does not require cable armoring, making the joints easier and reducing maintenance.
(iii) There is less chance of fault due to solid mechanical protection.

Disadvantages

(i) The initial rate is very high.
(ii) The current carrying capacity decreases as the cables are in a close group.
This method is commonly used in short-length cable routes like workshops, road crossings, etc.

3. Solid System Method – In this method, the cable is inserted in open pipes. Throating is made of cast iron, stoneware, or wood. After fixing the cable position, the throttling is covered with bitumen. This type of cable is used in flat places.

Advantages

(i)Minimum power generation
(ii) Trusted Mechanism
(iii) It requires minimum maintenance
(iv) This system is less affected by environmental changes.
(v) The practical lifetime is maximum.
(vi) They have maximum mechanical strength.

Disadvantages

(i) It is more expensive.
(ii) For this, there should be experienced labor and necessary environmental conditions.
(iii) Due to less heat dissipation, the current carrying capacity of this cable also decreases.
