Erection of Poles – The poles are usually pressed directly into the ground. The heavier poles are erected by the derrick pole method and the lighter ones by the dead man method. These methods of erecting pillars are described as follows.
(a) Derrick Pole Method
The paths on which the pillars are to be erected. The pillar to be erected on that path is first laid. A derrick pole is erected by pulling it with the help of a rope so that it rests near the bottom of the pole to be erected. This pole is placed so that the bottom of the pole is above the pit and on the opposite side of the skid board placed in the pit. As shown in Figure (1), in this Method, the pole is tied with five ropes a little below its summit so that the edge does not bend while erecting the pole.
Rope number 2 is tied tightly to the top of the pole, as shown in Figure (1), and this rope passes through the pulley on the derrick pole. It is pulled by hand in the direction shown in Fig. (1). Rope No. 3 is tied on the pole. This rope is pulled to make the pole stand. Along with this rope, number 2 is also pulled, and with the help of a skid board, the pole slips down into the pit. In this position, the rope is raised vertically using 1,3, and 4.
Now the pit is filled with soil, and care is taken whether each layer of soil is properly pressed or not. Special arrangements are made for the foundation if the soil is loose, as shown in Fig. 2 (a) and (b). Wherever such a situation exists, special balks are installed to give additional support to the pillars.

(b) Dead man’s Method
In this method, the pillars are placed near the line path, and the skid board is kept vertically behind the pit. Now raise the poles through the hands and support the pole by the dead man on the opposite side of the side where the pole is raised. In this Method, the guard ropes are tied a little higher than the half-height of the pole. Now let’s raise the pole and at the same time keep moving the Dead Man Tech forward. This is done until a 3-meter high pole spike, or ladder comes under the pole.
In this Method, the ladder is used for the first raise of the pole, and the dead man proceeds to take the tech-forward. By raising the ladder further forward, another ladder of about 4 meters is placed under the pillar. Now the dead man tech is removed from the surface, and the guard ropes are tightened.
So that the pole does not move, now after this, a 5 m high ladder is used, and with each step, the pillar is raised. This process continues until the ground level of the pole is at an angle of 70°. Now the back and side ropes are loosened a bit until the pole comes to a vertical position. A 12-meter high pole requires a 5-meter high ladder. With the help of a guard rope, the vertically standing pole is kept stable, and the pit is evenly filled with soil.
Concreting of pillars is usually done on the side of the road or the places of high population. In this, a post of cement concreting is made on the ground floor. The pillars should be well buried with the soil before making the post.
