Two types of push-pull power amplifiers.
Class A Push-Pull Amplifier- Two amplifiers T1 and T2 have been used in this amplifier. The two amplifiers T1 and T2 are assumed to be identical. Their emitter terminals are interconnected. The base and collector of the transistor are connected on opposite ends of the I/P and O/P transformers (Tr1 and Tr2). Both transformers Tr1 and Tr2 are center-tapped.
Resistors R1 and R2 provide biasing arrangements. The load is connected across the secondary windings of transformer Tr2. To deliver maximum power to the load by the amplifier, the turn ratio of Tr2 (O/P transformer) should be taken in such a way that the output impedance of the transistor should match the load impedance.

The currents ic1 and ic2 flow in the opposite direction through the primary of the transformer (Tr). ic1 and ic2 are equal in magnitude. Therefore, there is no DC component of collector current in the primary of the transformer (Tr2). When AC signal is given in the input, during the +ve half cycle the transistor becomes more +ve while T2 becomes less-ve. Collector current always stays in the same plate as base current.
Thus collector current ic1 increases and .c2 decreases. This current (ic1 and ic2) flows in the opposite direction to the primary of the center-tapped O/P transformer (Tr2). Therefore, the magnitude of the voltage induced in the load is directly proportional to the collector current difference (ic1-ic2). ic1).
When ic1 increases then ic2 decreases and when ic2 increases then ic1 decreases. So one transistor is pushed in conduction and the other transistor is pulled in out of conduction. Hence the name of this amplifier is a push-pull amplifier.
Advantages of a push-pull amplifier
(i) Due to the cancellation of even harmonics, there is very little distortion in it.
(ii) The DC component of the collector current of transistors T1 and T2 flows in opposite directions. Therefore, there is no DC magnetization or core saturation of any kind in this.
(iii) When no input signal is given, the power dissipation is zero.
(iv) Impedance material is possible because of the transformer.
Disadvantages of the push-pull amplifier
(i) Due to the use of two transformers, its circuit is very bulky and costly.
(ii) – It requires two 100% identical transistors. This is not possible.
(iii) The maximum capacity of each amplifier is 50% and the total capacity of two transistors is also 50%.
(iv) Power is very expensive.
